What to Know
For medical cannabis patients going through the renewal process for the first time in Ohio, there are some helpful things you should know:
Patient Certification
Medical marijuana patients do not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial patient certification. All medical marijuana doctors approved by the state can evaluate the medical records of medical marijuana patients and make recommendations for renewing registrations.
You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial Ohio medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still go through the renewal process with Leafwell online.
Yearly Renewal
You need to renew your Ohio medical marijuana card with the Ohio Department of Commerce through the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (OMMCP) every year. To make the renewal process a stress free experience, Ohio allows medical marijuana patients to start their card renewal up to 90 days before their registration expiration date (this is the expiration date listed on your card). It’s a good idea to start your medical marijuana card renewal early to ensure there’s no gap in your coverage. (You’ll see a button called “Renew Card” in your registry profile to start this process.)
Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?
You can purchase medical marijuana at an Ohio dispensary using your card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical marijuana, so it’s best to start your renewal early.
What You Need
You’ll need to provide the following to renew your Ohio medical marijuana card:
Leafwell Account
If you got your initial patient certification somewhere else, you’ll need to create a Leafwell account to renew your medical marijuana card with us. Don’t worry, it only takes a few minutes.
Medical Marijuana Recommendation
Once approved by a healthcare provider with Leafwell, the provider will update your information with the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program. If you’re going through your medical marijuana card renewal with a different recommending physician, they won’t be able to send their doctor’s recommendation until after your current registration expiration date.
Proof of Identity
Acceptable forms include your Ohio driver’s license or OH state ID.
Next Steps After Approval
Congrats on getting your medical certification! You’re almost there, but there are a few more steps to complete for your medical marijuana card renewal to be final:
- Before You Start: What You’ll Need
- A credit or debit card for payment
- The guide below
Your Leafwell physician has already sent all the necessary details for your card renewal to the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program after your appointment if they’re able. Our team has done the heavy lifting for you!
- Log In: Head over to the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program and log back into your registry account since you’re a returning user.
- Complete the Application: Click “Renew Card” and follow the prompts to complete your application.
- Pay the Fee: Pay the registration renewal fee of $0.01. Good news—if you’re part of assistance programs like Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC, you might qualify for a $0 fee!
- Download Your Card: Your new medical marijuana card is available to print from your registry account as soon as you finish your application and pay your registration fee/renewal fee. This new active registry card will be valid for one year, which you’ll see on its new expiration date.
- Start Shopping: With your new card and a valid photo ID (like an Ohio driver’s license), you can now legally purchase medical cannabis from an approved dispensary.
Note: You have 60 days from your physician’s approval to complete these steps. If you miss the deadline for successfully submitting everything, your certifying physician will have to resubmit your certificate to the state, and that comes with an additional fee.
Caregivers
Caregivers also need to renew their medical marijuana cards. This process differs a bit from renewing patient medical marijuana cards. Caregivers aren’t given a notification through their registry account that it’s time for a medical marijuana card renewal, so mark your calendar. You’ll need to remember to log into your registry account (you’ll click “Renew Card” just like patients do) to fill out the renewal application and pay the registration fee. The state strongly recommends that caregivers wait until the same month as the expiration date on their medical marijuana cards to start this process. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to go through the caregiver approval process when renewing registrations.

What is a 45-day supply in Ohio?
In Ohio, a 45-day supply of medical marijuana is part of a system designed to help patients, caregivers, and dispensaries manage the purchase limits. Here’s how it works:
When you get a medical marijuana recommendation, it covers a 90-day period. This period is split into two 45-day segments. The first segment starts when you receive your recommendation and covers the first 45 days. The second segment covers the next 46 to 90 days. During each 45-day segment, you are allowed to buy up to a 45-day supply of medical marijuana. In terms of products, that works out to:
- Flower/Plant Material: 4.5 ounces (127.35 grams)
- Oil for Vaporization: 26.55 grams of THC
- Oral Administration Products (Oils, tinctures, edibles, capsules): 4.95 grams of THC
- Topical Products (patches, lotions, etc): 13.275 grams of THC
Once you have bought a 45-day supply, you cannot buy more until the next 45-day segment begins. This system ensures you do not go over the legal 90-day possession limit.
How often can I go to the dispensary in Ohio?
There’s no limit to how many times you can visit the same or different dispensaries in Ohio. Dispensaries track how much medical marijuana you purchase, though, so they won’t sell you any more once you hit the 45-day limit outlined by Ohio law. You can still visit dispensaries even if you hit this limit. They just won’t sell you any more until your next 45-day period.
