Northern Mariana Island residents aged 18 or older are eligible to apply for a medical marijuana card.
Caregiver
Medical marijuana patients in the Northern Mariana Islands can have a caregiver. A registered caregiver may apply on behalf of someone unable to complete the application independently. Registered caregivers must be 21 or older.
All patients under 18 must have a registered caregiver apply on their behalf.
Can Minors Qualify?
Yes. Minor patients may be eligible for a medical marijuana card in the Northern Mariana Islands so long as they have at least one qualifying medical condition and a doctor’s recommendation.
Patients under 21 are welcome to join the program but must have an adult caregiver.
Legal Topics
Cannabis is legal for recreational and medical use in the Northern Mariana Islands. The territory legalized both adult-use cannabis and medical marijuana in September 2018. Dispensaries opened to the public just under three years later, in July 2021.
Recreational consumers generally pay a 15% tax on retail sales, whereas medical cardholders typically pay a 7.5% tax.
Legislators still need to establish guidelines for allowing patients to receive certification through telehealth platforms like Leafwell. We hope to be operating in the territory soon, and you can join our waitlist to be notified when we open in your area.
Medical users possessing a Homegrown Registry Card can have up to 12 mature plants in their home, with an additional 24 immature plants.
Caregivers
Medical marijuana patients in the Northern Mariana Islands can have a caregiver, and patients under 21 must have a designated caregiver.
You may qualify as a primary caregiver under the territory’s law if:
- You are at least 21.
- You have been designated for that purpose by a legal medical marijuana patient.
Reciprocity
The Northern Mariana Islands do not have cannabis reciprocity, meaning you cannot use a medical card from another state while visiting the territory.
