What to Know

For patients renewing their Illinois medical marijuana card for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:

  • document

    Patient Certification

Medical cannabis patients do not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial patient’s certification. All medical marijuana doctors approved by the state can evaluate medical conditions and certify patients for the Illinois Department of Public Health.

You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial Illinois medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still go through the renewal process with Leafwell online.

  • Renewal Frequency

Medical marijuana cardholders have two options in Illinois:

    • Apply for an extension of your Illinois medical marijuana card each year
    • Go through the renewal process every three years

If you’re dealing with an acute condition, a one year card may be right for you. For patients dealing with chronic medical conditions, it makes sense to get renewed for a three year card. If you’re a returning patient seeking an extension of your registry identification card, you’ll get a letter approximately 45 days before it expires reminding you to start your application. For those applying for three year cards, letters reminding you about your renewal application go out about five months before your card expires.

    Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?

You can purchase medical marijuana at Illinois licensed dispensaries using your card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical cannabis, so it’s best to start your renewal early.

Next Steps After Approval

Congrats on getting your medical certificate! You’re almost there, but there are a few more steps to complete for your Illinois medical marijuana card renewal to be final:

  • Before You Start: What You’ll Need
    • A credit or debit card for payment
    • The guide below
  • Medical Certificate: Download the certificate issued by one of our doctors based on their assessment of your qualifying medical conditions, so you have it available to upload to the state renewal application for medical marijuana cards.
  • Log In: Log into your Illinois State profile to fill out the necessary forms for medical marijuana card renewal.
  • Continue Shopping: You’ll keep using your old Illinois medical marijuana card and your valid photo ID to shop for medical marijuana at approved dispensaries.
  • Download Your Card: The day after your Illinois medical marijuana card expires, print out your new medical card from your profile with the state.

Note: You have 60 days from your physician’s approval to complete these steps. If you miss the deadline for successfully submitting everything, your certifying physician will have to resubmit your certificate to the state, and that comes with an additional fee.

Caregivers

Designated caregivers also need to keep their medical marijuana cards active. If the person for whom you act as a caregiver is going through medical marijuana card renewal or extension and wants you to remain their caregiver, they’ll need to fill out the required documents for you as well. This should be done at the same time as their medical marijuana card renewal.

FAQs

Can I print my Illinois medical card online?

Yes, absolutely. Your Illinois medical marijuana card is available to download or print through your state profile. When you go through the medical marijuana card renewal process, your new card will be available to print the day after your old one expires.

What is the limit on medical marijuana cards in Illinois?

With a medical marijuana card in Illinois, you're allowed to possess up to two and a half ounces of medical cannabis per 14-day period. A marijuana card in Illinois also allows you to grow up to five mature cannabis plants.

What is MCPP Illinois?

MCCP is the Medical Cannabis Patient Program in Illinois, which allows patients across the state to access medical cannabis if they have a qualifying medical condition, such as multiple sclerosis. If you're filling out a patient application or a renewal application, you'll also see this called the Medical Cannabis Registry Program, the Medical Cannabis Program, or the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program.

Does medical marijuana affect Social Security disability benefits you’re already receiving?

Your Social Security disability income may be reviewed differently if you have a medical marijuana card in Illinois. While IL has legalized both medical and recreational cannabis, it's illegal at the federal level, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) is a federal agency. Patients with disability claims may go through a longer review process because the SSA may want to look into whether your qualifying condition is made worse by cannabis. But this is why the doctor who reviews your conditions for a med card seriously considers whether the benefits of marijuana are right for your health when you go through a renewal. They take your health seriously and consider each patient carefully so you have proof of your diagnosis and prescription with a licensed MMJ doctor.
