If this is your first time going though the medical marijuana card renewal process in PA, there are some helpful things you should know:
Patient Certification
You do not need to see the same doctor that issued your initial patient certification. Any registered practitioner approved by the state can evaluate your qualifying medical condition and make a recommendation to renew your patient certification.
You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial PA medical card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still renew with Leafwell online.

Keep watching for communication from PA’s medical marijuana program. They’ll send you reminders about when you need to renew your medical marijuana card and will email you a link to pay your annual fee.
Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?
You can purchase medical marijuana at a Pennsylvania dispensary using your card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical cannabis, so it’s best to start your renewal early.
What You Need
You’ll need to provide the following to renew your certificate for the medical marijuana program in PA:

If you got your initial patient certification somewhere else, you’ll need to create a Leafwell account to renew your medical marijuana card with us. Don’t worry, it only takes a few minutes.
Medical Marijuana Recommendation
Once approved by a healthcare provider with Leafwell, the provider will update your information with the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Registry using your existing patient ID number.
Proof of Identity

Your Leafwell physician has already sent all the necessary details to the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Registry after your appointment. Our team has done the heavy lifting for you!
- Log In: Head over to the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Registry and log back in since you’re now a returning user.
- Complete the Application: Follow the prompts to fill out your application.
- Pay the Fee: There’s a $50 state fee to process your renewal application. Good news—if you’re part of assistance programs like Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC, you might qualify for a $0 fee!
- Mail Time: Your new PA medical marijuana card will be mailed to your address once you’ve paid. Expect it to arrive in 1-2 weeks. The card will be valid for one year.
- Start Shopping: With your new card and a valid photo ID (like a Pennsylvania driver’s license), you can now legally purchase medical cannabis from an approved dispensary.
Note: You have 60 days from your physician’s approval to complete these steps. If you miss the deadline, your certifying physician will have to resubmit your certificate to the state, and that comes with an additional fee.
Caregivers
Caregivers also need to renew their certification and ID card. This process is very similar to how we’ve outlined for renewing a patient certification and ID card. Like patients, you’ll receive an email from PA’s medical marijuana program 60 days before your ID card expires. You can also get renewed through Leafwell even if you got your original card from somewhere else.

How is renewal different for minor patients?
The renewal process for minors is slightly different because the minor patient doesn’t receive their own card—everything is done through their registered caregiver.
The patient will still need to see a doctor to get recertified; however, the caregiver will need to ensure the annual payment is up to date.
What do I do if my PA medical card expires?
If your original card expires, you can still apply to the PA program to get medical cannabis. If you can, try to avoid letting your ID card expire because the renewal process is a little shorter than reapplying. If your ID card does expire, don’t worry. You just need to get a patient certification like you did the first time.
If your ID card expires, you’ll go through the same process as new patients. You can book an appointment with an approved physician through Leafwell and save a couple of minutes since you’re a returning user. This video chat appointment lets an approved physician certify that you have a qualifying medical condition and that conventional therapeutic interventions haven’t worked in the past. They’ll resubmit your information to the Pennsylvania Department of Health for you.
You’ll still want to go back into your patient portal, though, and confirm that your current address is on file so that your new card gets to the right place.
The biggest difference you’ll experience is that you’ll pay the higher state fee to get a patient certification because you missed the window for renewing your med card.
Can I go to a dispensary before my card arrives in PA?
If you start your renewal early enough, you’ll be able to shop for medical cannabis with your old med card while you wait for the new one to arrive. But you do need your state-issued ID (like a driver’s license) and your medical card to shop at Pennsylvania dispensaries. That means whether your old card expired or you forgot a current card at home, you won’t be allowed to shop until you have a medical cannabis card in hand.
Can I use my PA medical card the day it expires?
Yes, you can still use your medical card on its expiration date. Any day after that date, however, your card won’t be good. That’s why it’s a good idea to renew your card early so you don’t have a gap between when your original card expires and when your new card arrives.
