Cannabis for Viral and Prion Disease or Infections of the Central Nervous System (CNS)

calendar-icon

Last updated on Oct 7, 2024

A prion is a virus-like organism made up of an aggregation of elongated fibrils that make up a prion protein. Aggregations of these proteins make up an infectious prion. Prions are a disease of structurally abnormal proteins, and they attack nerve cells in the brain. Neurodegenerative diseases like Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD), its variant (vCJD), Gerstmann–Sträussler–Scheinker syndrome (GSS), fatal familial insomnia (FFI), and kuru are prion diseases.

There is little research into the uses of cannabis for prion diseases, but one study suggests that CBD prevents the accumulation of prions and protects neurons against prion toxicity.
