Cannabis for Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon). Colon cancer is often put under the umbrella of “bowel cancer”. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or rectal cancer. “Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.” The estimated number of colorectal cancer cases in the US are 104,270 new cases of colon cancer and 45,230 new cases of rectal cancer.

The digestive system contains many endocannabinoid receptors, and cannabis is known for helping reduce inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD may have a similar effect on colon and bowel cancer, and they can also induce apoptosis (cell death) of cancerous cells. More research is needed.
