Purple Urkle

A strain of disputed parentage, Purple Urkle is an indica-dominant hybrid composed of 80% Cannabis indica and 20% Cannabis sativa. It has THC levels of around 20% but has been measured as high as 26%. This strain has relaxing, sedative effects, putting many people to sleep. Purple Urkle could therefore help manage chronic pain and insomnia.

The origins of Purple Urkle — sometimes called Purple Urple — are a mystery. It is thought that this strain is a phenotype of either Mendocino Purps or Granddaddy Purple that emerged from the Emerald Triangle in Northern California in the ‘80s. Either way, Purple Urkle has many similarities to other cultivars in the Purple Family, including an indica-dominant genotype, relaxing effects, fruity grape flavors, and velvety undertones.

Purple Urkle is named after Steve Urkle, the main character of the television show “Family Matters.” Jaleel White, the actor who plays the legendary Steve Urkle on the show, announced in 2021 that he was joining the cannabis industry. In partnership with 710 Labs, Jaleel is launching a line of Purple Urkle variants called “ItsPurpl.”

Purple Urkle weed is popular among cannabis users for its sweet, fruity taste. This strain has strong grape notes — often described as tasting like grape soda — with some earthy undertones. Some people also pick up notes of berries and plums. The grape theme is continued in Purple Urkle’s appearance. The calyxes of the flowers are a velvety purple color.

Purple Urkle produces an indica-dominant full-body high that relaxes you from head to toe. This calming blend is used to calm the mind, help you sleep, relieve aches and pains, or just sit back and relax when you want to. Because of this, Purple Urkle is a nighttime strain.

Growing

Purple Urkle plants can be tricky to grow, especially from seeds. Experts agree that you will need some growing experience to be able to tackle this strain and that it’s much easier to grow it from a clone or cutting. Purple Urkle also requires attention to its nutrient supply and is susceptible to mold and disease, adding further complexity.

This strain can be grown indoors and outdoors, though it’s unique in that indoor plants yield more than those grown outdoors. Successful indoor plants can yield around 18 ounces per 10 square feet, whereas outdoor plants won’t yield more than 9 ounces per plant. This, combined with shorter flowering periods, makes indoor growing more economical. Experienced growers may consider using a hydroponic setup or the “Sea of Green” (SoG) method to increase yield further.

height icon

Height

Expect this plant to stay short and bushy, like a typical indica plant. It will reach between 40 to 55 inches tall.

humidity icon

Humidity and Temperature

Outdoor plants will need a hot, sunny climate like the Emerald Triangle in Northern California, with temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. For indoor growing, you will need to control the temperature and humidity, and seedlings and clones will need high humidity of around 75%-80%.
This drops gradually when the plant enters the vegetative state and should be below 50% by the flowering stage. If you choose to grow your Purple Urkle indoors, you will have to ensure that you have good airflow to avoid mold and disease — a good indication that the conditions are not right is if the plants start to smell unpleasant.

Flowering

Expect indoor plants to flower in eight to nine weeks. Expect outdoor plants to be ready for harvest by mid-October.
