What to Know
For patients renewing their Texas medical marijuana card for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:
Patient Certification
Texas patients do not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial cannabis prescription. Any medical marijuana doctor approved by the state can evaluate medical conditions and certify patients for the Compassionate Use Program, Texas’ medical marijuana program.
You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still complete your renewal with Leafwell online.
If you use a different doctor to renew your Texas medical marijuana card, you need to request that your previous physician terminate the relationship in the CURT system before your appointment.
Renewal Frequency
Texas medical marijuana cards are valid for one year and can be renewed online. Plus, when you renew with Leafwell, we’ll send you a reminder 30 days before your certificate expires so you can avoid a lapse in coverage.
Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?
You can purchase low-THC cannabis at Texas dispensaries on the day your certification expires. After your cannabis prescription expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy cannabis for medical use, so it’s best to start your renewal early.
What You Need
You’ll need to provide the following to renew your participation in the medical cannabis program:
Leafwell Account
If you got your initial patient certification somewhere else, you’ll need to create a Leafwell account to renew your Texas medical marijuana card with us. Don’t worry, it only takes a few minutes.
Medical Marijuana Recommendation
Once approved by a qualified physician during your renewal consultation, the doctor will add your information to the CURT system. Texas does not issue digital or physical medical cards, so this is all you need to buy low-THC cannabis at state dispensaries.
Proof of Identity
Acceptable forms include your Texas driver’s license or a state government-issued ID.
Next Steps After Approval
Congrats on getting your medical marijuana certificate! Since dispensaries can access the CURT system, this is all Texas medical marijuana patients need to do.
Caregivers
There’s no formal process for becoming a medical marijuana caregiver in Texas. That means you don’t need to apply for or renew a Texas medical marijuana card. Instead of applying for your own medical cannabis card, the patient for whom you’ll serve as a caregiver will give your name when they apply for their medical marijuana card or during their renewal consultation. The MMJ doctor who helps them will enter this information with theirs into the CURT system. When you buy medical cannabis for your patient, you’ll need to show proof of ID and provide the patient’s last name, date of birth, and last 5 digits of their social security number.
FAQs

What is the Texas Compassionate Use Act?
The Texas Compassionate Use Act is a law enacted in 2015 that allows patients with certain medical conditions to access low-THC cannabis for medical purposes. Initially, the program was restricted to patients with intractable epilepsy, but it has since been expanded to include multiple other conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, incurable neurodegenerative disease, spasticity, and terminal cancer. Under this act, qualified physicians can prescribe low-THC cannabis, which contains less than 0.5% THC by weight, to registered Texas patients. The program is regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety, which oversees the licensing of dispensaries that grow, process, and distribute cannabis.
How is the renewal process different for minor patients in Texas?
It’s not much different than the process for any other Texas resident renewing their med card. Your legal guardian has already been entered into the CURT system when you applied for your first card. The doctor who meets with you about renewing your cannabis prescription may need to verify your legal guardian’s information again, so have that ready.
