What to Know
For patients in the medical cannabis program renewing their New York MMJ card for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:
Patient Certification
Medical cannabis patients do not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial patient’s certification. All medical marijuana doctors approved by the state can evaluate the medical records of certified patients and make recommendations for renewing registrations to the medical cannabis program.
You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial New York medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still go through the renewal process with Leafwell online.
Yearly Renewal
You need to renew your New York med card with New York state’s Office of Cannabis Management every year. Leafwell makes that as easy and stress-free as possible with telemedicine consultations with cannabis doctors and nurse practitioners. You’ll have a quick video call with one of our healthcare providers, and they’ll send all the necessary forms to the New York State Department for you. It’s a good idea to start your medical marijuana card renewal early to ensure there’s no gap in your coverage.
Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?
You can purchase medical marijuana at New York dispensaries using your card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical cannabis, so it’s best to start your renewal early.
What You Need
You’ll need to provide the following to renew your participation in the medical cannabis program:
Leafwell Account
If you got your initial patient certification somewhere else, you’ll need to create a Leafwell account to renew your medical cannabis certification with us. Don’t worry, it only takes a few minutes.
Medical Marijuana Recommendation
Once approved by a healthcare provider with Leafwell, the provider will update your information with New York State. Our healthcare providers do the legwork for you to make renewing your medical marijuana card as easy as possible.
Proof of Identity
Acceptable forms include your New York Driver’s License or a state government-issued ID
Next Steps After Approval
Congrats on getting your medical certification! You’re almost there, but there are a few more steps to complete for your medical marijuana card renewal to be final:
- Before You Start: What You’ll Need
- A credit or debit card for payment
- The guide below
Your Leafwell physician has already sent all the necessary details for your medical marijuana card renewal to New York State after your appointment. Our team has done the heavy lifting for you!
- Wait for Notification: Once New York has reviewed these materials, they’ll send a digital form of your medical cannabis card to your Leafwell account within 48 business hours.
- Log In: Log into your Leafwell account to access your medical marijuana card online.
- Download Your Card: Your new medical marijuana card is available to print from your Leafwell account. Your medical marijuana card in New York is good for one year.
- Start Shopping: With your new card and a valid government-issued photo ID (like a New York driver’s license), you can now legally purchase medical cannabis from an approved dispensary.
Note: You have 60 days from your physician’s approval to complete these steps. If you miss the deadline for successfully submitting everything, your certifying physician will have to resubmit your certificate to the state, and that comes with an additional fee.
Caregivers
Designated caregivers also need to keep their medical marijuana cards active. What designated caregivers need to do depends on what happens with their approved patient. If your patient is allowed to extend their certification with the medical marijuana program, you’ll be automatically registered and don’t need to do anything. Your certification is extended until their new expiration date. If, however, your patient receives a new certification for medical cannabis in New York, you’ll need to re-register as a designated caregiver. This means certified patients will need to re-add you as their caregiver, and you’ll need to go through the New York State online system to get a new registry ID.
