What to Know

For patients renewing their Oklahoma medical marijuana card for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:

  • document

    Patient Certification

A medical marijuana patient does not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial patient license. All medical marijuana doctors approved by the state can evaluate the medical records of medical marijuana patients and make recommendations for renewing a patient license.

You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial Oklahoma medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still go through the renewal process with Leafwell online.

  • Yearly Renewal

You need to renew your medical marijuana card in Oklahoma with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority every two years. Leafwell makes that as easy and stress-free as possible with telemedicine consultations. You’ll have a quick video call with one of our healthcare providers, and they’ll send all the necessary forms to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority for you. It’s a good idea to start your medical marijuana card renewal early to ensure there’s no gap in your coverage.

  • Renewal Process Timing

Mark your calendar because the timing for filling out your renewal application is a little specific for Oklahoma medical marijuana cards. You should begin the renewal process no sooner than 30 days before your current medical marijuana card in Oklahoma expires.

It also takes some time on the state’s side to process the renewal of Oklahoma medical marijuana cards. That means you’ll need to leave some time for them to process your paperwork and approve your new card in Oklahoma. Long story short: start your medical marijuana card renewal as close to 30 days before your expiration date as possible. This puts you in the correct window and allows plenty of time for the state to issue your new card in Oklahoma.

    Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?

Yes, Oklahoma residents with a medical marijuana card can purchase medical marijuana at Oklahoma dispensaries using their medical card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical marijuana, so it’s best to start the renewal application process early.

Next Steps After Approval

Congrats on getting your medical certification! You’re almost there, but there are a few more steps to complete for your medical marijuana card renewal to be final:

  • Before You Start: What You’ll Need
    • A credit or debit card for payment
    • Your physician certification/medical marijuana recommendation form
    • Proof of residency (your OK driver’s license can do this, or a bill that shows your residential and mailing addresses)
    • The guide below
  • Log In: Log into your account through the OMMA homepage.
  • Fill Out the Forms: State patients should fill out all required documents for their medical marijuana card renewal through their state patient portal. Since your new card will be mailed to you, be sure to double-check the residential and mailing addresses on file to ensure you get your medical card.
  • Pay the State Fee: You’ll make an application fee payment of $100 plus a $4.30 credit card processing fee. Individuals with Medicaid or Medicare will pay a reduced fee.
  • Watch the Mail: If your medical marijuana card renewal is approved, your approval letter and new medical marijuana card will be mailed to you 14 business days from your application submission date. If you’re not approved, you’ll receive a denial letter.
  • Start Shopping: With your new medical marijuana card and a valid government-issued photo ID (like your Oklahoma license), you can now legally purchase medical cannabis from an approved dispensary.

Note: You have 30 days from your physician’s approval to complete these steps. If you miss the deadline for successfully submitting everything, your certifying physician will have to resubmit your certificate to the state, and that comes with an additional fee.

Caregivers

As a caregiver, your certification is linked to your medical marijuana patient and their OMMA card in Oklahoma. A patient license is independent of a caregiver license, but yours doesn’t work that same way. When going through a patient renewal, your medical marijuana patient should link you with their medical cannabis card. That means your caregiver medical card in Oklahoma is good for up to two years.

But there are several things that can affect your caregiver medical marijuana card in Oklahoma. If your medical marijuana patient doesn’t link you to their patient license or forgets when going through patient renewal, you no longer have an Oklahoma MMJ card. Similarly, if your patient isn’t given a new physician certification because their treatment with medical marijuana is deemed no longer necessary, your Oklahoma medical card is also invalidated.

FAQs

How much is an Oklahoma medical card with SoonerCare?

State fees on Oklahoma medical marijuana cards are lower for those with proof of Medicaid (SoonerCare) enrollment. Instead of $100 plus a $4.30 credit card processing fee, individuals with SoonerCare will pay $20 plus a $2.50 credit card processing fee for their Oklahoma medical marijuana card.

Can I go to a dispensary before my card arrives in Oklahoma?

No, even if you've been approved for a patient license or a medical marijuana card renewal, you're unable to go to a dispensary without a physical card in your hand. For renewal patients, that's why it's critical to start the renewal process as early as you can since it takes 14 business days from when you complete the application process for your approval letter and new card to arrive. If you're a new patient, you'll still need to wait until your medical marijuana license arrives to shop at a dispensary. When you plan to shop at a dispensary, remember that you need your medical marijuana license and photo ID.

Can you use your Oklahoma medical card on the day it expires?

Yes, Oklahoma patients can use their Oklahoma MMJ card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, however, you'll no longer be able to obtain medical marijuana. Mark your calendar so you can start the renewal process early to avoid gaps in your access to medical marijuana.

How does card renewal work for minor patients?

Minor patients can also renew their medical marijuana cards online. The requirements for renewing medical marijuana cards for minors are very similar to getting initial approval for medical cannabis. To keep a minor's medical card in Oklahoma active, they'll need a physician's certification from two physicians, and their renewal application needs to reaffirm approval by a parent or legal guardian. The physician's certification clarifies that the doctor is suggesting an Oklahoma medical card "according to the accepted standards a reasonable and prudent physician would follow" for any other medicine.

How does card renewal work for short-term patients?

Oklahoma residents with short-term medical cards that are good for 60 days also need to go through card renewal to continue legal access to cannabis. Like the renewal application for long-term treatment, these short-term patients will need their proof of identity (a valid photo ID) and their physician's recommendation to renew their medical marijuana cards. Out-of-state patients are also short-term patients in Oklahoma since they're eligible for 30-day medical marijuana cards in the state. You can renew your Oklahoma medical card, even if it's one of these limited cards. You can start the certification process to renew this out-of-state medical card one week before your current card's expiration date.

What happens if I have questions about my renewal application?

If you have questions while you're working on documents to renew your medical card in Oklahoma, you should contact the OMMA call center at (405) 522-6662.

What do I do if my mailing address has changed?

Oklahoma patients who moved while their last medical card was active don't need to reapply to the entire program. While you're filling out your documents to renew your medical card in OMMA's online platform, you just need to double check your contact information in the system and change your physical address on file. You should always check renewal applications for physical and mailing addresses and missing information to make sure your renewal goes smoothly.
