What to Know

For medical marijuana patients going through the renewal registration process for the first time in Massachusetts, there are some helpful things you should know:

  • document

    Patient Certification

You do not need to see the same doctor who issued your initial patient certification. Any registered practitioner approved by the state can evaluate your qualifying medical condition and make a recommendation to renew your program ID card.

You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial program ID card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still renew your certification status with Leafwell online.

  • Yearly Renewal

You need to renew your medical marijuana card with the state of Massachusetts every year. But to make that easier, you can renew your program registration up to 60 days before your card’s expiration date. Make sure to keep your login information for the state’s marijuana program and Leafwell handy.

    Register with the State

If you don’t have an online account with the state of Massachusetts, you should go through the registration process now. The MA marijuana program opens the online application to renew your medical card 60 days before its expiration date through those accounts.

    Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?

You can purchase medical marijuana at a Massachusetts dispensary using your card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy cannabis, even for medical use, so it’s best to start your renewal early.

Next Steps After Approval

Congrats on getting your medical certification! You’re almost there, but there are a few more steps to complete for your patient certification and ID renewal to be final:

  • Before You Start: What You’ll Need
    • A credit or debit card for payment
    • Your patient certification
    • A valid photo ID (this is only needed if any of your information changed or you got a new ID)
    • The guide below
  • Log In: Head over to the Massachusetts patients portal and log back in since you’re now a returning user.
  • Complete the Application: Follow the prompts to complete the necessary documents for the renewal process. These forms will self-populate with some information from your account.
  • Mail Time: Your new MA medical marijuana card will be mailed to your address once the state has reviewed your application and approved it.
  • Start Shopping: With your new card and a valid photo ID (like a driver’s license), you can now legally purchase medical cannabis from an approved dispensary.

Note: Your Leafwell patient certification is valid for one year. If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may be eligible for a two-year certification.

Caregivers

Caregivers also need to renew their registration. The easiest way to do this is through Massachusetts’ Medical Use of Marijuana Online System (Online System). Paper applications are allowed, but the processing time is much longer. Once you log in, you’ll fill out forms to renew your registration with the state. You’ll need a valid ID card for this process. If your registration is approved, a new card will be mailed to you. Please note that your patient also needs to maintain active registration in order for you both to be approved for medical use in MA.

FAQs

What do I do if my MA registration card expires?

You can still use your medical card on its expiration date. Any day after that date, however, your card won't be good. That's why it's a good idea to renew your card early so you don't have a gap between when your original card expires and when your new card arrives.

How is renewal different for minor patients?

Parents and legal guardians need to apply to renew a minor's program registration on their behalf. You'll need to make sure your patient certifications are still active, and, as with the initial application, one needs to be from a pediatrician or pediatric health specialist.
