What You Pay With Leafwell
Patients of the medical cannabis program in Virginia save more with Leafwell. We have a money back guarantee if your pending medical marijuana card renewal is not approved.
What to Know
For patients renewing their Virginia medical marijuana card for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:
Patient Certification
Medical cannabis patients do not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial patient’s certification. Any medical marijuana doctor approved by the state or nurse practitioner jointly licensed by the Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing can evaluate medical conditions and certify patients for the Cannabis Control Authority in Virginia.
You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still complete your renewal with Leafwell online.
Renewal Frequency
Virginia medical marijuana certificates are valid for one year and can be renewed online. Plus, when you renew with Leafwell, we’ll send you a reminder 30 days before your certificate expires so you can avoid a lapse in coverage.
Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?
You can purchase medical marijuana at Virginia licensed dispensaries using your card on the day it expires. (We’ll go into this more later, but you no longer need your cannabis card with you as long as you bring your certificate.) After the expiration date on either your card or your certification, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical cannabis, so it’s best to start your renewal early.
What You Need
You’ll need to provide the following to renew your participation in the medical cannabis program:
Leafwell Account
If you got your initial patient certification somewhere else, you’ll need to create a Leafwell account to renew your medical marijuana card with us. Don’t worry, it only takes a few minutes.
Medical Marijuana Recommendation
Once approved by one of our doctors, the provider will add your patient certification to your Leafwell profile. You can stop here if you want. You no longer need to go through the renewal registration process with the state of Virginia unless you want a card to carry around.
Proof of Identity
Acceptable forms include your Virginia Driver’s License or a state government-issued ID.
Next Steps After Approval
Congrats on getting your medical certificate! Since you can now use your patient certification at dispensaries, your renewal is complete unless you want a card to carry around. If you still want a card, there are just a few more steps for your medical marijuana card renewal to be final:
- Download Digital Card: Receive an email from the state to access and download your digital “Validation of Written Certification” card.
- Start Shopping: Go to your nearest dispensary and shop for your medical cannabis products.
- Optional: Register with the state to receive a new digital registered patient card ($50 fee).
Caregivers
Caregivers, which are called registered agents in Virginia, don’t always need to renew their own Virginia medical marijuana cards. If your patient told their MMJ doctor that you act as their registered agent during their medical marijuana card renewal, you’ll be listed on their medical cannabis card and do not need to get your own or go through your own renewal. If, however, they didn’t list you and your name is not on their Virginia medical card, you will need to register with the Virginia CCA before you can pick up medical cannabis on their behalf. If you end up needing to go through the registration process, you’ll pay a $25 fee to the state of Virginia.
FAQs

Does medical marijuana card show up on background check in Virginia?
No, your Virginia medical marijuana card does not show up on a background check. This holds true even when you get a new certification to renew your medical marijuana card. Having a medical card is healthcare information protected by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). You should still know that having a Virginia medical marijuana card can prevent you from owning a firearm, getting a commercial driver’s license, or working a federal job.
Can I go to a dispensary without a card in Virginia?
Yes, you can. As of July 1, 2022, you no longer need your physical card with you to shop for medical cannabis products at a Virginia dispensary. Instead of your Virginia medical marijuana card, you can now use an unexpired valid written certification from a licensed MMJ doctor and your government-issued photo ID. But, please note that you need both of these, not just one of them.
