After finishing your application, you’ll be connected with a state-licensed medical marijuana doctor, typically in 10 minutes or less, or make an online appointment.

3. Get Your Certificate
If approved by your healthcare provider, they’ll send your new patient certificate to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission for you.

For patients going through New Jersey medical marijuana card renewal for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:
Patient Certification
Existing patients can see a different doctor than the one who issued their initial certificate for the New Jersey medical marijuana program. All medical marijuana doctors approved by the state can evaluate medical conditions and chronic pain and certify patients for the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.
You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial New Jersey medical marijuana card at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still renew your medical card with Leafwell online.
Renewal Frequency
New Jersey medical marijuana card renewal is a little interesting, and you’ll need to keep two schedules in mind. That’s because the state separates outpatient certification renewal from New Jersey medical marijuana card renewal. Here’s what you need to know:
What does that mean for medical patients? That means you’ll meet with a doctor about medical marijuana treatment every year, but you don’t need to apply to the state every year for your digital card. Every year, your doctor will check your medical records and make sure medical cannabis treatment is right for you.
If medical marijuana is no longer needed for your health but you like its other benefits, don’t worry. You don’t need your New Jersey medical marijuana card. You can buy recreational marijuana legally at any local dispensary if you’re over 21.
Can I Purchase Medical Marijuana?
You can purchase medical marijuana at New Jersey licensed dispensaries using your card on the day it expires. After the expiration date, you’ll no longer be able to buy medical cannabis, so it’s best to start your renewal early.
You’ll need to provide the following to renew your participation in the medical cannabis program:
Leafwell Account
If you got your initial patient certification somewhere else, you’ll need to create a Leafwell account to renew your New Jersey medical marijuana card with us. Don’t worry, it only takes a few minutes.
Medical Marijuana Recommendation
Once approved by one of our doctors, the provider will send this certification to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission for you.
Proof of Identity
Acceptable forms include your New Jersey driver’s license or a state government-issued identification card.
Congrats on getting your medical certificate! You’re almost there, but there are a few more steps to complete for the renewal of your medical marijuana card in New Jersey to be final:
Note: You have 60 days from your physician’s approval to complete these steps. If you miss the deadline for successfully submitting everything, your certifying physician will have to resubmit your certificate to the state, and that comes with an additional fee.
If you went through the card renewal process last year, you’re done as soon as your Leafwell MMJ doctor sends your updated certification to the state. You’ll keep using your card in New Jersey to access medical cannabis as you have been.
Designated caregivers also need to keep their medical marijuana cards active. You’ll also need to fill out the required documents every two years to keep an updated card in New Jersey. Please keep in mind that the expiration dates for patients and caregivers match, so if your patient adds you after they’ve completed their card renewal, your card may be good for less than the full two years. Keeping this medical card active allows you to purchase marijuana from alternative treatment centers for your patient(s), even if they’re not there with you.
