Jack Herer

Also known as The Jack, Platinum Jack, JH, and Premium Jack, Jack Herer is a famous strain of 55% sativa and 45% indica, enabling it to create balanced cerebral and bodily effects. Believed to be a cross between a Haze hybrid and a Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk hybrid, its tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content is between 15% and 24%, and its cannabidiol (CBD) content is around 0.7%-1.0%. Jack Herer is noted for its uplifting effects and could help manage anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.

The strain was named in honor of the real Jack Herer, a famous cannabis rights campaigner who passed away in 2010. He was affectionately known as “The Hemperor,” or “The Emperor of Hemp” and was the author of the Hemp Bible and The Emperor Wears No Clothes.

Jack Herer’s aroma is much prized and properly cured. Jack Herer strain flowers have a citrus bouquet. This plant releases an herbal scent similar to sage when burned, and the smoke also has an herbal taste, with some users describing the overall impression as similar to potpourri.

Since Jack Herer’s development in the Netherlands in the 1990s, it’s become a staple strain of cannabis for many people. It is famous around the world both for recreational and medicinal use. It has won nine Cannabis Cup titles, including first place for sativa in 1999.

Jack Herer genetics have since been used to develop several other strains, including Pineapple Jack, Jack’s Cleaner, Critical Jack, Jack Skellington, and Jack Flash.

Effects

Jack Herers has been reported to have the following effects:

  • Creativity
  • Energizing
  • Euphoria
  • Focus

The following adverse effects have also been reported:

  • Dry Eyes
  • Dry Mouth
  • Paranoia

Dry mouth and dry eyes are among the most common adverse effects reported by cannabis users. Fortunately, these side effects are relatively minor and can be alleviated by staying hydrated and eye drops if needed.

Anxiety/paranoia is another more common adverse effect of cannabis users. This is possibly due to interactions between THC and endocannabinoid receptors in the amygdala, a brain region that activates bodily responses to perceived threats in the environment.

Not everyone experiences anxiety/paranoia when they consume cannabis, which may be partly due to individual differences in each user’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). As some strains are more likely to induce anxiety/paranoia than others, users who have had trouble with these effects may find it helpful to shop around for different strains, especially those with lower reported THC levels. Another option is to simply try lower doses.

Medical Applications

Medicinally, Jack Herer has been reported to alleviate stress, depression, and anxiety. It has been distributed under prescription by Dutch pharmacies as a variety of medicinal-grade cannabis. As Jack Herer is an energizing strain, it’s best taken in the morning as a “wake and bake” and isn’t usually suitable for treating insomnia. However, over time, the sedative effects of THC may take hold and have relaxing effects that aid sleep.

Anxiety, Panic Disorders

Low doses of THC can help relieve anxiety, as THC can blunt the effects of cortisol on stress receptors over time.

Depression

The uplifting effects of Jack Herer can help improve mood. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD can also modulate serotonin transmission, which has anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects.

Cannabinoids’ ability to modulate serotonin transmission can help reduce the pain, frequency and/or intensity of headaches/migraines. Cannabis’ stress-busting terpenes may also relieve tension headaches.

Growing

growing strains

In terms of appearance, Jack Herer plants have dark green leaves and dark orange pistils. The plant produces large quantities of trichomes and sticky resin, and it’s considered a sparkling and crystalline strain.

Jack Herer is one of the most widely available strains. It can be grown outdoors or indoors. If grown outdoors, it prefers a Mediterranean-type climate. It’s highly resistant to diseases, molds, and pests. It should be fed lightly with essential nutrients to prevent burn.

Silica-based foods are best as they allow the plant to grow large, thick stems to support the weight of the big, dense buds. Yield-wise, growers can expect a single square meter of this strain to produce up to 18 ounces (510 g) per square meter when grown indoors and 18 ounces per plant outdoors.

Height

Jack Herer plants grow up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall, which is taller than most strains of cannabis. This means they may require topping if grown indoors. Topping involves pruning the top of the main stem off the plant, stopping it from growing too tall and instead promoting lateral branches’ growth, making the plant shorter and bushier overall.

Humidity and Temperature

Jack Herer prefers a growing temperature between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit or 21-27 degrees Celsius.

Flowering

Jack Herer strain typically takes eight to 10 weeks to flower if grown indoors. If grown outdoors, it should flower between late September and early October.
