Quadriceps-sparing myopathy is the former name for a group of syndromes called hereditary inclusion body myopathies (HIBM). HIBMs are characterized by progressive disability with marked sparing of muscle strength in the quadriceps muscles of the thigh. It is caused by mutations in the genes that code for the enzymes UDP-Nacetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase (GNE).

There are few if any studies looking at cannabis or cannabinoids for the treatment of HIBMs, but there is some evidence for usefulness in conditions like Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), caused by dystrophin deficiency, which result in chronic inflammation and irreversible skeletal muscle degeneration.

Autoimmune muscle disorders like polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM), immune-mediated necrotising myopathy (IMNM), inclusion body myositis (IBM) and others causing myositis (rare conditions causing pain & weakness in the muscles) may be treated by immunomodulatory medications, which includes cannabinoids.
