One of the challenges of getting your Florida medical marijuana card is that the state government doesn’t allow for telehealth appointments. This means patients must visit a medical marijuana doctor in person to renew an existing medical marijuana certification.

This in-person requirement is challenging in normal circumstances, but it’s especially difficult when natural disasters like Hurricane Ian disrupt every aspect of life. Luckily, the Florida Department of Health recognizes that and has legalized telehealth visits for medical marijuana renewals for a limited time.

Who Qualifies?

On October 5, 2022, the Florida DoH issued an emergency order to allow patients to be recertified by qualified physicians for existing patients in the following counties until November 30, 2002:

  • Charlotte
  • Collier
  • DeSoto
  • Flagler
  • Hardee
  • Hendry
  • Highlands
  • Hillsborough
  • Lake
  • Lee
  • Manatee
  • Orange
  • Osceola
  • Pinellas
  • Polk
  • Putnam
  • St. Johns
  • Sarasota
  • Seminole
  • Volusia

Residents in other counties are not eligible to recertify online.

Telehealth services can only substitute the requirement to “conduct a physical examination while physically present in the same room as the patient,” as required by Florida State Statutes Section 381.986(4)(a)1.
